Second Parkland survivor dies by suicide this week, police say

WASHINGTON (CIRCA) — A second Parkland shooting survivor has killed himself this week, police tell the Miami Herald.

Investigators with the Coral Springs Police said that a current student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida died Saturday in an "apparent suicide." The age and identity of the student has not been confirmed.

The news comes on the anniversary of the 'March For Our Lives,' the Parkland student-led movement against gun violence in Washington, D.C. The death also follows another suicide of a survivor of the Feb. 14, 2018 shooting earlier this week, Sydney Aiello. Aiello had been a close friend of victim Meadow Pollack and suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder and survivor's guilt, her mother told NBC News. The Broward County Medical Examiner's office said she died from a gunshot wound to the head.

The Miami Herald reports that the student who died Saturday also died from a gunshot wound, according to Ryan Petty. Petty is the father of Alaina Petty, who was 14 when she was killed in the Feb. 14, 2018 shooting. Petty has become an advocate for suicide prevention following his daughter's death, starting a foundation called the Walk Up Foundation.

The investigation into Saturday's suicide is reportedly ongoing.
