WASHINGTON (CIRCA) — She may not look it, but Barbie is celebrating her 60th birthday this year.
The toy company Mattel, Inc. launched Barbie for the first time on March 9, 1959. The co-founder, Ruth Handler created the doll because she noticed her own daughter always playing with paper dolls. The name 'Barbie' even comes from her daughter.
60 years later, Barbie still encompasses the original mission that Handler developed. "My whole philosophy of Barbie was that, through the doll, the little girl could be anything she wanted to be," Handler said. "Barbie always represented the fact that a woman has choices."
Throughout her "life," Barbie has taken on a number of professions like surgeon, director, game developer, nurse and even president. For the 60th anniversary, some of her most famous careers are receiving an outfit update. Currently, the 60th anniversary astronaut Barbie is available.
