Hoodwinker sunfish

A really weird fish never before seen in North America washed up on the coast of California

WASHINGTON (CIRCA via CNN NEWSOURCE) — OK, this looks like something out of a sci-fi film, but it's 100-percent real.

It's a gigantic fish — an oversized version of what you'd expect to see in a small, home aquarium.

The creature washed up on the beach last week in Southern California. It turns out the 7-foot fish was a long way from home — on the other side of the world from wherever it lived.

The strange-looking animal was identified as a hoodwinker sunfish, and it's never been seen before in North America.

The marine scientist who discovered the species says the only known sightings in modern history have been in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Chile.
