BETHESDA, Md. (CIRCA via WJLA ) — “Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you our newest Petty Officer, Hospital Corpsman Second Class, Sully H.W. Bush,” a speaker announced in front of a crowded room at the USO Warrior and Family Center at Walter Reed Bethesda.
“This is like Christmas!” Elaine Rogers, with USO-METRO, said smiling. “This is such an exciting time!”
Excitement filling the room as Sully H.W. Bush starts a new chapter.
“President Bush would definitely have called you all points of light,” said Evan Sisley, who worked as George H.W. Bush’s personal aide and senior medic.
“Sully came to the Bush family in a very difficult time. With the passing of Mrs. Bush, they lost the matriarch of that family,” Sisley said to the group.
Well-trained, Sully mostly provided the comfort and affection that only a dog can bring.
“He brought a lot of light to the room when it was really needed,” Sisley said.
“With the President’s dog coming to visit you at your hospital bed, that’s going to get your attention,” said John Miller, president and chief executive officer of America’s VetDogs.
The group says Sully may work a bit with occupational and physical therapy patients but his biggest task will be to bring smiles.
“Each hour, he touches 12 lives, so he’s going to touch thousands upon thousands of lives here at Walter Reed,” Miller said.
