For cannabis workers, getting union support in an illegal industry is a joint effort

WASHINGTON (CIRCA via MOBIUS.LAB) — Cannabis as an industry is still federally illegal, because it operates in a gray area.

There are no industry standards or regulations for a safe work environment, nor are there legal resources for employees to use. This makes it easy for employers to take advantage of employees. Some cannabis workers have reported long hours in dangerous conditions and being paid in product instead of cash. Sexual harassment and discrimination have also been problems within the industry.

Now, the United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW) is hoping to change that. So far, the UFCW represents tens of thousands in the cannabis industry, and the Teamsters union is organizing farm workers in California.

The UFCW aims to ensure fair wages, health insurance, and sustainable careers for its members. This is the first step in bettering the lives of cannabis workers nationwide.
