GREEN BAY, Wis. (CIRCA via WLUK) — If you've held on to your VCR since manufacturers stopped making VHS tapes 14 years ago, it might come in handy again. Like many things, videos could be making a comeback. When's the last time you watched a movie on video?
“I do have two VHS players in my basement that I don’t want to get rid of," said John Cook, who works at a Goodwill in Wisconsin.
If this sounds like you, you'll be happy to know there are plenty of tapes to go around.
“We see tens of thousands a year,” Cook said.
And you can snatch them up, for almost nothing at local thrift stores.
“We sell them for 50 cents a piece,” Cook said.
Who's still buying VHS tapes?
“The older people, the kids, the collectors,” said Jennifer Maglio, the general manager for Mojo Electronics, a retro electronics store with locations in northeast Wisconsin.
Before DVDs, and way before streaming, a shelf of VHS tapes was fashionable.
And it will be again if Urban Outfitters, a trendy national retailer, has its way.
Online, the business is selling themed VHS mystery packs — get five videos, with a choice of horror, sci-fi or romance — for a hefty price of $40.
At the Goodwill in west Green Bay, we found five romantic comedies for just $5.
“Its kind of crazy,” said Maglio, laughing.
If you're willing to buy them in bulk, Mojo's sells 15 for just $5.
“We probably have, within the chain and our warehouse, a thousand copies of 'Titanic' right now,” Maglio said.
Mojo's has probably the best selection in Green Bay.
“They all kind of funnel to us, because there aren’t a lot of places left that deal with them,” Maglio said.
Don't worry, there are enough to go around. It's hard to find them, but they're in no way rare.
Proof that what's old is new again, and oh, and don't forget to be kind ... and rewind.
