WASHINGTON (CIRCA) — An 8-year-old girl in Alabama pulled off a big surprise when she asked her stepfather to adopt her in the fall.
The video shows Leonardo Avila being guided out onto a baseball field with his face covered in September in Shelby County. He then sees his wife's daughter, Alessandra, holding a sign that reads, "Papi, you are my forever home. Will you adopt me?"
In tears, Avila accepts and takes the papers she hands him. He posted the video on Facebook with a post sharing their story last week. Avila has been in Alessandra's life as a father figure since she was less than a year old.
"There was no book on 'How to be a great step dad' that I could of picked up and read, so I focused on just being a great dad," he wrote. " ... Alessandra, sweetheart, thank you so much for sticking with me and choosing me to be your earthly father."
The adoption became official Jan. 10.
