Paraglider nearly swept away by surprise dust devil in Australia

WASHINGTON (CIRCA via STORYFUL) — An experienced paraglider in the small town of Manilla in New South Wales, Australia, was caught up in a dust devil while preparing for a flight Wednesday.

The man's wife caught the encounter on video. He can be seen being lifted up by the cloud of dust that formed and swirled around before being ejected into the air. His wife yells out for him throughout the video, asking the other pilots nearby if he's OK. They confirmed he was fine.

“The pilot quickly regained control of the glider and flew away to continue on a relatively uneventful five-hour and 180-kilometer cross-country flight,” said Godfrey Wenness, the chief flying instructor at Manilla Paragliding.

The pilot was visiting from overseas and was one of 40 who were setting up to take flight that day.
