Columbia University student caught on camera saying 'white people are the best thing to happen to the world'

A man seen in a video recorded at Columbia University in New York on Sunday, December 9, shouting, “White people are the best thing to ever happen to the world,” has been identified as a student at the University’s Department of Physics.

Video taken early in the morning on Sunday, December 9, captures a white man ranting to a group of undergraduates about his love for “white people,” saying “Europeans built the modern world.”

According to a Columbia student publication, students called Columbia Public Safety when the same man confronted a group of students at JJ’s Place, a late-night dining spot. On Monday, Columbia announced an investigation into the incident.

Since the video was first posted on Sunday, the student, who also conducts research in Quantum Physics, has been identified online as Julian von Abele.

Von Abele wrote a book on physical theories, called Time and the Multiverse. He also appears to have run a write-in campaign for the 2016 presidential election. Profiles in his name appear across multiple platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, and Reddit.

The video has gained traction on 4chan, where posters in discussions celebrated von Abele’s rant and attacked students posting and writing about the incident.
