PORTLAND, Ore. (CIRCA via KATU) — We all may like to sneak a little taste of the dough before baking cookies, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is warning against it this holiday season.
Health officials warn that raw eggs can contain salmonella, and raw flour hasn’t been treated to kill germs like E. coli. Eating either one before you bake the cookies could cause illness.
The warning isn’t just for cookies; the CDC says it also includes other unbaked dough for things like pizza, biscuits or other goodies with raw flour — like homemade play-dough.
When baking, the CDC says you should make sure you follow safe food handling practices. Bake or cook the raw dough before eating, follow the recipe, bring the food to the proper temperature, and keep raw eggs and flour separate from ready-to-eat foods.
While this might put a damper on some of your Christmas cheer, just remember that there are cookie dough recipes that don’t use flour or eggs, and they are completely safe to eat raw:
