BELLEVUE, Wash. (CIRCA VIA KOMO) — A delivery man was supposed to be delivering food at a Bellevue home, but instead he was seen on surveillance video stealing from the family.
The delivery man seen on video dropping off food at Dan Spinazzola's home, already had his eye on picking up something else from the porch — a package he hides with his foot.
"He just slides it on back with his foot and then he crowds the door so she can't see it,” Spinazzola said.
Even though the delivery man sees a camera, it doesn’t stop him.
After handing over the food, the delivery man pretends to leave. But as soon as the door is clear, he comes back and snatches the package.
Spinazzola's reaction to the video? "I would say shocking is number one. Brazen is the number two, just the gall of you're a delivery person, taking someone else's delivery. Probably stupid would be on that list."
Police say porch pirates are notorious this time of year and home owners have to be vigilant.
"Feel pretty violated too, you've ordered something you're excited to get and then someone has just taken it and not paid for anything,” said Spinazzola.
That's why Spinazzola got the camera: Thieves have hit his home before.
He just didn't expect one of them to do it while on the job.
"Greed is overriding their brain, they don't think they'll get caught,” said Spinazzola.
Circa partner KOMO News reached out to DoorDash but didn't hear back from the company.
However, Spinazzola’s family shared an email from the company saying the delivery man doesn't work there anymore.
The email said in part, "In no way does DoorDash condone the sort of conduct. We have therefore taken the step in removing them from our platform — they will no longer be able to deliver future orders on DoorDash.”
Bellevue police said the man was charged with theft and the charges have been forwarded to the prosecutor.
