WASHINGTON (SBG) - Six french fries are the recommended portion size according to a professor of epidemiology and nutrition at Harvard University.
Professor Eric Rimm was interviewed for an article on the salty snack by The New York Times. Rimm referred to the fries as "starch bombs" and said that potatoes generally lack the children of "compounds and nutrients" found in other leafy or green vegetables.
A study published in 2017 by The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that people who eat fried potatoes two to three times a week are a greater risk of mortality. While individuals that eat unfried potatoes had a lower risk.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Americans eat an average of 115 pounds of white potatoes a year, the majority of which are in the form of french fries.
But if six fries won't cure your craving, The New York Times article did suggest healthy alternatives like getting the smallest order size or splitting your order in half.
If that still isn't enough, home baked, home fries and sweet potato fries are all considered more "healthy" than those served at fast food restaurants.
