CHILLICOTHE, Ohio (CIRCA) — Elizabeth Sanders went viral over the summer for having her baby inside a Burger King bathroom.
The circumstances are not something of which Sanders is proud. The 26-year-old told Circa sister station WSYX-TV she was high on heroin and Xanax when she had her baby boy.
“If I don’t keep my recovery first I’m not going to have my kids anyway, you have to make that your top priority” Chillicothe mom who gave birth in a Burger King toilet in August speaks about drug addiction, sobriety, & child custody battle. “Waking up at the hospital and not being pregnant anymore and not knowing what happened, that’s what was really scary,” Sanders said.
Now, she has turned the page to a new chapter in her life, one in which she has been sober for more than 122 days.
“I hate how it happened. I hate that everything happened, but I truly do not know if it wouldn’t have happened that I would be clean right now, that I would even be alive,” Sanders told WSYX.
Sanders is now at Cheryl's House of Hope, a recovery and transition program for women.
She said she wants to stay sober for her three children, who are under temporary custody with her parents -- two with her mother and one with her father.
Editor's note: This article has been corrected to show that two of Sanders' children are under temporary custody with her mother, not three.
