NEW ORLEANS (CIRCA) - For the first time ever, a male-born homecoming queen was chosen at a New Orleans school, WTAE reports.

According to the report, the queen, 14-year-old Dylan Ligier, was elected by the Morris Jeff Community School.

Ligier's father told WTAE that it took courage for his son to run for homecoming queen.

"I had to understand it myself and it's something (that) takes a lot of courage to do that I don't think any kid wants to face ridicule," Joseph Ligier said.

A GoFundME account was set up to help with Ligier's expenses to attend the homecoming. Ligier's father explained on the page that he's a single father and a disabled vet on a tight budget. As of Saturday, the page had raised $1,060. The original goal was set at $650.

The homecoming dance will take place on November 16.
