CAMDEN, Ark. (CIRCA via KATV) -- The 3-year-old son of a Camden Police Department officer is dead after he accidentally shot himself with a pistol, police say.

The department says it's still in shock after the incident, which happened Thursday afternoon. While an investigation is underway, CPD says it's offering support and prayers to the boy's father.

Thursday afternoon, Officer Alec Faulkner was on duty when he received a call to his very own home-- his worst nightmare coming true.

"Officer Faulkner's son somehow did receive a fatal injury," Dana Wetherbee with CPD said.

Officer Faulkner's wife, Jessica Faulkner, told police she was home alone with the couple's only child. She briefly left the toddler to go to the bathroom -- then, she heard the gunshot. Police say she found her child lying on the floor in a bedroom with a gunshot wound in his head. According to police, it appears the toddler found a loaded pistol and accidentally shot himself.

First responders arrived on the scene and transported the boy to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

"It's just a tragic loss for the family and for our family -- our CPD family," Wetherbee said.

Arkansas State Police is leading the investigation of the incident. CPD said no one is facing charges at this time.

"Our hearts and prayers are with the Faulkner family," Chief of Police Boyd Woody said in a press release.
