Alabama votes to add anti-abortion language to state constitution

Alabama voters decided to add anti-abortion language to the state’s 1901 constitution, giving fetuses full constitutional rights.

Amendment 2 makes it state policy to “recognize and support the sanctity of unborn life and the rights of unborn children, including the right to life.”

It also adds, “Nothing in this Constitution secures or protects a right to abortion or requires the funding of an abortion.”

The change serves as a “trigger law,” meaning it won’t prevent women from obtaining an abortion, but it does pave the way for an abortion ban if the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade.
