WASHINGTON (Circa) -- Democratic Rep. Jared Polis has defeated Republican opponent Walker Stapleton in the Colorado governor's race, becoming the first gay man elected to a governorship in the U.S.

Polis spent five terms in Congress before running to replace Gov. John Hickenlooper, who was term-limited from running again. Stapleton currently serves as Colorado's treasurer, and is distantly related to the Bush family.

Polis is an advocate for marijuana legalization, and a critic of the war on drugs. Stapleton campaigned as "a proven conservative fighter," and received President Donald Trump's endorsement.
