WASHINGTON (Circa) — John Stapleton has been arrested and charged with lewd and lascivious molestation of a victim under 12 years old.
The 60-year-old is accused of molesting a six-year-old at a school that was being used as an emergency shelter for victims of Hurricane Michael.
An eyewitness told the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office in Florida that she saw a live recording of the child being touched inappropriately under her clothing.
Authorities have also reviewed video of the incident that occurred.
Police say Stapleton admitted to touching the young girl but said his touching was not in an area that would be considered lewd according to the law.
Stapleton also told police that the six-year-old told him "it felt good," an arrest report obtained by NWFDailyNews.com says.
Background checks are normally done as people enter shelters in order to separate sexual predators from children and families, according to police in the region.
Court records show no evidence Stapleton has ever been charged with child molestation charges, NWFDailyNews.com reports.
