WASHINGTON (ABC7) — A man in a motorized wheelchair died Wednesday afternoon after officials say he fell to the bottom of an escalator at the Columbia Heights Metro Station in Washington, D.C.
According to a surveillance video of the incident, DC Metro says the man pressed the elevator button and waited about 10 to 15 seconds before he decided to use the escalator at around 1:30 p.m.
The elevator was in service, according to DC Metro, also known as WMATA.
Video shows the man wheeling himself onto the escalator and grabbing the handrail before he rides it to the top.
WMATA says once the man reached the top, he fell to the bottom of the escalator before he could get off it.
The station manager and bystanders rendered aid before DC Fire and EMS arrived at the scene.
WMATA says the man was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Metro is in the process of contacting next of kin at this time.
