Police rescue, then arrest Florida man stuck on top of a grocery store's roof

WASHINGTON (Circa) — A man in Volusia County, Florida has been arrested after he climbed on top of the roof at Food Mart, a grocery store in the area.

The individual says he was thirsty which warranted a visit to the store in his mind. The store happened to be closed when the man was attempting to go inside to get some water.

Police arrived on scene after the store's owner said the man, Michael Monacelli, was calling for help and claimed he was dying. Medics and a fire ladder were dispatched to the scene.

Monacelli says he was dehydrated when he tried to get some water to drink. After realizing the store was closed, Monacelli climbed up a tree in the back before getting to the roof.

Body cam footage captured Monacelli and deputy Royce James in an exchange after he was rescued by authorities.

“I was gonna pay,” Monacelli said.

“It was closed,” James replied. “How are you gonna pay when it’s closed?”

“I didn’t know, I’ve never been here to this store before,” Monacelli said.

Monacelli is being charged with attempted burglary of an unoccupied structure and criminal mischief.
