WASHINGTON (Circa) — A former "Sesame Street" writer confirmed in an interview that two of the show's most iconic characters, Bert and Ernie, were written as a gay couple.

Mark Saltzman, who began working on the show as a script writer in 1984, confirmed to Queerty that he wrote the pair as if they were in a relationship.

Bert and Ernie have shared an apartment at 123 Sesame Street for 29 years (albeit sleeping in different beds), and speculation has always been rife about the nature of their relationship.

'Saltzman said that the pair's relationship in many ways reflected his own same-sex relationship.
