NIAGARA FALLS, New York (Circa) — If the Niagara Falls were a stage, the Maid of the Mist boat tour would be the best seat in the house. The tour boat is the best way for tourists to get a close-up view of what Canadians have affectionately dubbed the eighth Wonder of the World.
The Maid of the Mist takes visitors on a one-of-a-kind boat ride through the three waterfalls that make up the Niagara Falls: Horeshoe Falls, American Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls. The 20-minute ride travels to the center of the swirl where all three falls meet. Rides depart every 15 minutes.
The first Maid of the Mist boat took sail in September 1846. Since its launch, there have been 11 versions of the boat in total that have been put into service over the years. The original boat was used to transport people and goods. It was so large that it could carry a stagecoach and horses.
Today, the Niagara Falls produces 600,000 gallons of water per second each each year. This destination has attracted tens of millions of visitors to this day.
