Mount Vernon hosts National Purple Heart Day Ceremony

MOUNT VERNON, Va. (Circa) - The home of America's most famous general is commemorating the military hundreds of years later.

George Washington's Mount Vernon is hosting a special ceremony to honor the military's oldest decoration. The event includes several musical performances, a presentation of the colors and several speakers.

George Washington inspired the creation of the Purple Heart. His General Orders of 1782 outlined the creation of the Badge of Military Merit, the precursor to the Purple Heart, which was started in 1932 on Washington's 200th birthday.
