GAITHERSBURG, Md. (Circa) — Imagine a dog running and diving into a large pool of water with one goal in mind: catching a toy.
Dock Dogs is a premier canine aquatics competition where the canines in question get to do just that. Dogs of different breeds and ages can take part in several diving categories like the Big Air long jump or the Extreme Vertical high jump.
The dogs are scored by distance in the long jump and whether they can catch a toy that is thrown over the water.
Dock diving is a growing sport. Channels like ESPN and Outdoor Channel have aired Dock Dog competitions. The competition started in 2000 during the ESPN Great Outdoor Games. Since then, dogs all throughout the United States, Canada and Australia have competed.
