LOS ANGELES (Circa) - When you think "black coffee," your mind probably immediately goes to a regular cup of coffee without milk and sugar.
Well, Round K Coffee - a coffee shop and roaster based in New York and Los Angeles - is trying to change that with their popular and inventive drink, black matte latte.
At $7 per drink, the black matte latte has a lot to offer: It's completely vegan, and it's got a "secret" syrup that consists of Dutch-processed cocoa powder and organic coconut ash. The drink itself is not overwhelmingly sweet and has a nutty undertone that really complements the flavors of the espresso. The jet black "whipped cream" on top is made with almond butter, coconut cream, coconut ash and cocoa powder.
Ockhyeon Byeon, the founder of Round K, says the inspiration came from the desire to reinvent the ultimate black coffee. He chose to use coconut ash because he believes it's healthier than activated charcoal, which many other coffee shops use to make their dark drinks, and it's good for whitening your teeth.
And to make things even more interesting, the Los Angeles location of the coffee chain is hidden behind a famous shoe repair shop, Pasquale Shoe Repair.
