A new survey finds side hustlers earn $8,000 a year

NEW YORK , New York (Circa)- In today's gig economy, it's not unusual for someone to juggle more than one job at a time. In fact, a new survey by Bankrate found 37 percent of Americans have a side job.

On average, side hustlers make $686 per month and within a year could earn more than $8,200 by working a second job. According to the survey of more than 1,000 respondents, millennials side hustle harder than any other generation. Only 11 percent of survey participants said they worked a side job every week.

When asked where the extra money goes, 59 percent of respondents said they consider the money they earn from their side job to be disposable income. And 38 percent said they use the extra money to cover living expenses.

Popular side hustles include home repair online sales, crafts and child care.

The survey also found that men will often out earn and out work women when it comes to side jobs.
