(WKEF/WRGT) - If you’re considering transitioning to a vegan diet, here are seven tips to make the process a little easier:
1. Consider starting slow.
For some people, cutting all animal products out of their diet at once works best. For others, transitioning slowly is the way to go. Don’t feel like you have to give up everything overnight. Try going without cheese one week, and then the next add chicken to the list, and so on and so forth.
2. Create a meal plan.
This is the secret to a successful transition, not just to satisfy your taste buds, but also your body’s needs. It’s important you make sure you’re getting enough macronutrients and micronutrients.
3. Visit your doctor and/or a nutritionist.
It’s always a good idea to visit your doctor before you change your diet in any way. He or she will be able to guide you through the process and make sure you’re not forgetting any vital nutrients.
4. Find a vegan support group.
The transition is a lot easier when you have the support from others who have “been there, done that.” In Dayton, there are quite a few support groups, like Vegan Dayton and Don’t Eat the Homies.
5. Give your friends a heads-up.
Having support from your loved ones is just as important. If they know you’re eating vegan, it’ll help them plan the next time you decide to go out to eat. A steak restaurant probably won’t be the best idea.
6. Consider transitioning quietly.
In the beginning, you might find it’s hard to be scrutinized and questioned. Aside from telling your loved ones about your new diet, it might be a good idea to keep the lifestyle change to yourself until you are comfortable answering questions about it.
7. If you mess up, that’s okay.
If you’ve gone your whole life eating one way, it’s difficult to suddenly switch things up. Whether you accidentally eat a cookie that was made with eggs or purposely eat a grilled cheese sandwich, tomorrow is a new day.
