First woman calls televised MLB play-by-play since 1993: report

WASHINGTON (CIRCA) – A woman recently performed the first televised play-by-play for a MLB game since 1993, according to MLB.com.

MLB.com on Monday reported that Jenny Cavnar joined the rare club of female play-by-play callers during Monday night’s Colorado Rockies-San Diego Padres game.

“I am very excited about tonight,” Cavnar told MLB.com. “I’m really honored on the historical context of it, but I’m more excited for the team effort.”

“We have such a great team of broadcasters, producers, directors – so it’ll be really fun to collaborate with them and do the game tonight,” she added.

Cavnar has worked in MLB for 12 years, and Monday’s matchup between the Padres and Rockies featured two teams she has close ties to.

The broadcaster typically performs pre-and-postgame shows on TV for the Rockies, and she has also stepped in the team’s radio and TV color commentary.

Cavnar spent four years as a reporter for the Padres prior to joining the Rockies in 2012, and her former team emerged victorious 13-5 Monday.

“She knows her stuff,” analyst Dallas Braden, who also pitched in the league for five years, told MLB.com.

“I believe that by the third inning after all of the pleasantries have been exchanged, you will forget who is on the microphone, you will be learning about the game of baseball, you will be enjoying the stories being told to you – and that’s all a credit to her knowledge,” he added.

ESPN on Tuesday reported that Mary Shane was the first woman inside a booth during a MLB game in 1976.

Shane performed radio commentary for the Chicago White Sox before ultimately working on television.

Suzyn Waldman, meanwhile, has worked full time in the New York Yankees’ booth since 2005 after doing her first TV broadcast in July 1995.
