Remember the video game 'Grand Theft Auto 5?' It's a game known for it's gun fights, theft, violence, and even sexually explicit visuals. That game came out almost 5 years ago, and not only is it making money, it's doing it in historic fashion.
Since it launched in 2013, GTA 5 has sold 90 million units, grossing over six billion dollars. SIX BILLION DOLLARS!!!
Let’s put that in perspective: according to Marketwatch, the six billion dollars GTA has grossed beats out classic films like 'Star Wars' and 'Gone with the Wind.' Each of the legendary films have collected three billion dollars each and that figure includes inflation.
We called our first daughter "Melody", because my wife likes to play music. Which meant I got to name our second daughter, "Grand Theft Auto V".— Pundamentalism (@Pundamentalism) January 8, 2018
Also, 'GTA: San Andreas' the second highest selling game of the franchise-- only sold 27.5 million units. And the two of the top Call of Duty Games, Black Ops and Modern Warfare 3, have only sold 50.7 million units combined. It gets even more dramatic when you factor in money. Which makes a lot of sense when you consider this game is all about heists.
We live in an era where Grand Theft Auto V hasn't merely outsold the biggest-selling albums of all time, it's obliterated them.— mike diver is going to rezzed so like say hi (@MikeDiver) February 7, 2018
Which is. Something.
I can play Thriller while I'm driving, tho, so, there's that too.
Is the game so popular because it offers a space where people can do illegal things in a legal way or is it really one of the greatest games of all time?
