WASHINGTON (CIRCA) – Stella Artois is recalling certain bottles of its beer amid fears some might contain glass particles, according to the company.
Stella Artois on Tuesday reported that the recall applies to select 11.2 ounce bottles of Stella Artois’ beer.
The move impacts Stella Artois six-packs, 12-packs, 18-packs, 24-packs and “Best of Belgium” multi-packs in Canada and the U.S.
The recall also applies to Stella Artois Légère 6-packs and 12-packs in the U.S., with Stella Artois noting that all affected bottles were made by a third-party manufacturing partner.
Stella Artois added that the total number of potentially affected bottles are less than 1 percent of the glass bottles sold in North America annually.
“The safety of our consumers is our top priority,” said Christina Choi, global brand VP for Stella Artois, in a statement to Fortune.
“While the number of potentially-affected glass bottles is very small, we are recalling these Stella Artois packages as a precautionary measure,” she continued.
“Our team of technical experts has been working with our third-party glass bottle supplier to ensure this packaging flaw has been addressed.”
The safety of our consumers is our first priority. As a result of a glass packaging flaw from one of our 3rd party suppliers, we are issuing a voluntary recall. Forbes on Tuesday reported that Stella Artois decided upon the recall after researching a customer complaint.
Anheuser-Busch InBev, the Belgian-based brand that owns Stella Artois, discovered one of its third-party European bottlers were behind the potential risk.
The bottler was using equipment that could cause glass to break off and fall into the bottle, possibly endangering drinkers.
Brewery personnel are now collaborating with the packager and voice confidence that a similar accident will not occur again.
The recall strikes one the American market’s most popular beer brands, according to IRI data given by AB InBev.
Stella Artois is the fourth-fastest growing beer brand in the U.S., at least in chain off-premise accounts.
The brand also grew 13 percent last year, solidifying 28 consecutive quarters of double-digit growth.
