Last Call: Titles leaving Netflix in April 2018

by Ryan Painter
SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) A handful of titles that returned to Netflix in January are now poised to leave the platform. These titles include 1989’s “Batman” and all its sequels, “Apollo 13,” “30 Days of Night” and “The Shawshank Redemption.”

Here are five other titles I highly recommend checking out before they leave the platform in April.

Never Let Me Go

Alex Garland (“Ex Machina,” “Annihilation”) adapts Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel “Never Let Me Go,” a story about an alternate timeline where scientists are able to extend a person’s life beyond 100 years. That breakthrough comes at a cost as it requires a percentage of the population to be harvested for their organs. The story follows a group of friends who must face that they will die in their youth so that others can live to be old. The cast, which includes Carey Milligan, Keira Knightly and Andrew Garfield with Sally Hawkins, Andrea Riseborough and Charlotte Rampling, are simply astounding. “Never Let Me Go” is one of the most beautiful and intensely emotional cinema experiences I’ve ever had. The Prestige

The Prestige

For 2006’s “The PrestigeChristopher Nolan teamed with his brother Jonathan to adapt Christopher Priest’s novel about rival illusionists in London during the 1890s. The film stars Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale with Scarlet Johanssonand a particularly enjoyable performance from David Bowie as Nikola Tesla. (Leaving 4/21/18)

Bansky, the notoriously secretive street artist, directed “Exit Through the Gift Shop,” a documentary about Thierry Guetta, a man who, inspired by Shepard Fairey and Bansky, becomes an artist himself. Is the film real or a finely crafted social experiment? Either way it’s fantastic entertainment. (Leaving 4/22/18)

Kung Fu Panda

Kung Fu Panda

The Kung Fu Panda franchise had to grow on me. While many loved the first film, it wasn't until I saw its sequel that I bought into the loving parody of classic Chinese cinema. The plot of the third film in the series is a little overstuffed as it features a devious plot to get rid of the world’s kung fu masters while also introducing Po to his long-lost father. There’s a lot to digest, but the narratives do come together nicely. (Leaving 4/26/18)

Begin Again

Begin Again

It took the combination of director John Carney ("Once") and actors Keira Knightly and Mark Ruffalo to get me to see a film that included Adam Levine. Knightly stars as a young musician’s desire to make it big without having to compromise her artistic integrity. She is discovered by Ruffalo’s character, a has been record label executive desperate for a breakthrough artist. Levine's character? He's a sell-out musician who'll do anything to hear the roar of a crowd. (Leaving 4/27/18)
