Last 'blue moon' until 2020 to light up the sky Saturday morning

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) -- Make sure you're looking up Saturday morning, as the last "blue moon" of the year will be lighting up the sky.

Planning to take a look at this weekend’s blue moon? (Spoiler: if you have clear skies, the Moon will be beautiful, but not really blue. That’s just what it’s called when there are two full moons during a single calendar month.) More about phases: https://go.nasa.gov/2IY22fH

NASA said the full moon on March 31 will appear at 8:37 a.m.

The term "blue moon" is used for the second full moon in a month, and it's unusual to see two blue moons in one year.

There were two full moons in January, no full moon in February, and there will be two full moons in March.

NASA said the last time that happened was in 1999 and the next time it will happen will be in 2037.

This will be the last blue moon until October 31, 2020.

The March 31 full moon is typically known as the Sap Moon, according to Space.com.

They said it's important to note that the full moon could fall close enough to midnight in Universal Time to be in a different month in your time zone, so whether there are two full moons in a month or a February without a full moon can depend on where you are.
