China is using facial recognition to fine jaywalkers via text message

WASHINGTON (Sinclair Broadcast Group) -- Jaywalkers, beware!

You may now receive a text message with a fine if you cross the road illegally in China.

Police in the city of Shenzhen have set up artificial intelligence powered cameras that have the ability to send a message to your phone as soon as you break the law. The cameras are able to scan your face and identify who you are.

The technology was first introduced in April 2017 and was meant to shame jaywalkers on LED screens in order to deter the behavior from continuing to occur.

Over 13,000 jaywalkers have had their faces displayed on the road since the initiative began.
