TEBBETTS, Missouri (KRCG) - Police officer Keegan Hughes is running across the state of Missouri to honor fallen first responders through his initiative Project Remember.

Officer Keegan Hughes of the Blue Springs Police Department began his 9-day journey Friday night. His planned route extended from St. Charles to Kansas City, a trek of more than 260 miles.

Hughes said he will travel about 30 miles per day and will make the trip while sporting his police uniform. "As law enforcement, I felt that we need to remember these officers and additionally we need to do this to raise money for first responder charities," he said.

Hughes had been scheduled to continue his journey Monday at the Katy Trail in Tebbetts, Missouri .
