FIU student among 6 killed in bridge collapse, police expect more victims

MIAMI (WPEC) - Police say at least six people are now dead in the pedestrian bridge collapse at Florida International University.

The Mayor of Sweetwater said Friday an FIU student is among the victims.

The names of the victims have not been released.

Investigators announced the rise in the death toll Friday morning as the operation moved from a rescue to a recovery effort.

The 950-ton bridge collapsed Thursday afternoon, crushing at least eight cars.

Police said Friday the number of victims could climb as crews make their way through the unstable concrete and debris to search for victims. Miami-Dade Police say they expect to find more victims underneath the rubble.

The NTSB says it has crews on the ground beginning its investigation. 15 engineers, including a specialist are also on site to remove debris in a tactical but safe manner.

The FBI and OSHA are also part of the probe, according to Miami-Dade Police.
