Bad Gyal took over SXSW with her Catalan blend of global dance music

AUSTIN, TX (Circa) - Don't try to put Bad Gyal in a box.

The Barcelona artist, whose real name is Alba Farelo, is blending world dance musics into her own spin on pop. She has been dubbed the Queen of Catalan Trap, but to her, the title is inaccurate.

"My music, it's not trap. You can hear rhythms that you have in the dancehall, that you have in the raggaeton, but it isn't even dancehall or isn't even reggaeton," said Farelo. "I don't feel like I fit in any concrete genre. Look at me. I don't look like a Jamaican artist. I don't look like a Puerto Rican artist. So, it's just me.

Bad Gyal is somewhat of a cultural phenomenon in Spain. Although she has been to America before, she is making her first big splashes with an American artist with her current US tour and appearances at SXSW.

"It's surprising to me that the crowd knows the lyrics, actually," said Farelo.

And while she says her best reception might still be in Spain, SXSW offered an appreciate atmosphere.

"The best crowd is when I think that the people in the crowd they are feeling the music, they are dancing, the are enjoying themselves," said Farelo. "It's not like a concert, it's more like a party."
