“The entire time I knew him, he only ever had one goal: to wipe out half the universe.”
The stakes of the Avengers’ next battle are spelled out pretty explicitly at the start of the latest trailer for “Avengers: Infinity War,” released online Friday morning.
Six years of teases, hints, and post-credit scenes culminate in the arrival of Thanos, the villain first seen at the end of 2012’s “Avengers.” He is seeking the infinity stones, powerful gems that have been scattered throughout various Marvel Studios films for the last decade.
With them, we are told, Thanos can kill half of humanity. The heroes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are not wild about that.
The fight against Thanos and his minions brings together the Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, the Black Panther, and more.
Trailers have heavily featured battle scenes set in Wakanda, the fictional, technologically-advanced African nation introduced in “Captain America: Civil War” and spotlighted in this year’s many-record-setting “Black Panther” film.
The new trailer, conveniently hitting the web just as advance ticket sales open, provides fresh glimpses of “Infinity War”’s intense action sequences, lots of ominous dialogue, and a few moments of humor.
Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo and featuring an exhaustively long list of stars, “Avengers: Infinity War” is set for release on April 27.
