“There was a day… when the old Gods died!” So begins the saga of Jack Kirby’s “Fourth World” Saga — also known as the New Gods saga, and the phrase would be a fitting tribute to the take over of Ava Duvernay in Hollywood. Old Gods are out, New Gods are in, and one of DC Comics’ weirdest stories — involving Orion, Darkseid, Mr. Miracle, Big Barda, Highfather, Desaad and many other perfectly named cosmic being is being brought to life at long last by Ava DuVernay. Ava DuVernay’s recent ascendancy is uncontested — with her being the first black woman to direct a movie with a hundred million dollar budget for “A Wrinkle In Time”, and she is the second woman to direct a superhero film since Patty Jenkins directed “Wonder Woman”. Here to discuss the unstoppable rise of Ava Duvernay are our hosts — Meghan Tonjes, Ryan Mitchell, and our special guest Nicola Foti, creator of “Soundly Awake” on YouTube. So what do they think of this big comic book movie news?
So what does this trio think of Ava Duvernay? Ryan thinks it shows how the industry now responds to both women and people of color, and that this is a huge step forward. Ryan also predicts she will be enacting the inclusion rider. Meghan is excited for Ava and loves her style and talent, and is excited more inclusion. Meghan thinks this is a good period of Hollywood — one where good things are happening.
