WASHINGTON (ABC7) — The family of murdered Democratic National Committee staffer Seth Rich has filed a lawsuit against Fox News and two of its employees.
The lawsuit is based on a now-retracted story linking Rich to a Wikileaks data dump of 20,000 DNC emails.
"With disregard for the truth and for the obvious harm that their actions would cause the Riches, Fox, Zimmerman and Butowsky propagated and developed a fictitious story that their deceased son, Seth – not Russian hackers or anyone else – provided Democratic National Committee emails to WikiLeaks," said a press release sent out on behalf of the family.
Joel and Mary Rich, Seth's parents, also said in a separate statement "no parent should ever have to live through what we have been forced to endure."
"The pain and anguish that comes from seeing your murdered son’s life and legacy treated as a mere political football is beyond comprehension,” the Rich family said.
The leak came out just days after Rich's murder in July 2016.
Rich's parents claim Fox News commentators reached out to them under false pretenses in order to support what the lawsuit calls a "sham story."
