A historical moment took place today when students all across the country, in all 50 states, walked out of their schools for seventeen minutes to take part in a protest against gun violence. The day was dubbed “National Walkout Day”, and the seventeen minutes in question were meant to symbolize the seventeen individuals who were murdered by the Parkland shooter. Some students were lauded for this by their schools, while others schools tried to deny the students their right to protest and ended up punishing them for it. Viacom stations — such as Nickelodeon or MTV — even went silent between 10AM EST and 10:17AM EST to show their support for the students. It was a historic day, and here to discuss it are Meghan Tonjes, Ryan Mitchell, and our special CircaPop Live guest, actress Niki Koss of “Famous In Love”, which is getting set to air its second season.
So what did this trio think of the walkout? Meghan thinks its incredible to see the students being this active, and she hopes its going to make some kind of change. Meghan is also excited that corporations — such as Viacom — are getting involved. Ryan isn’t surprised however, since MTV and Nickelodeon have such a young audience, and Ryan knows they would be in support of them. Ryan was also impressed by situations where only one student would walk out alone. This kind of action changes the public’s opinion of the new generation, and its inspiring to know that incredible change is coming.
