Massive boat fire in Florida ruled an accident

FORT PIERCE, Fla. (CBS12) — The massive boat fire in Fort Pierce, Fla. is being ruled an accident, according to St. Lucie County Fire Rescue.

A spokeswoman told CBS12 The fire started in the engine of a small charter boat Saturday afternoon.

The flames roared through the boat at the Fort Pierce City Marina, which drew a crowd of onlookers as clouds of black smoke filled the air.

People were yelling for others to get out, according to one video clip shared to CBS12 by Roy Verschueren.

"My wife and I were at the adjacent restaurant Cobbs Landing," Verschueren told CBS12. "I heard a very deep sounding explosion. I immediately thought it was a boat compartment explosion as I've heard them before being a boater all my life. Me and several young guys ran to the black smoke just 100 feet away. The fire was huge and already out of control for the one guy with a fire extinguisher."

A man and a woman suffered burns in the boat fire. Rescue crews took them to the hospital.

No word on their conditions.
