"Fido get down off the couch!"
Normally, that is what owners tell their dogs when they happen to jump on the living room funiture.
But not only the volunteers at the Knox County Human Society in Illionis, encouraging their shelter dogs to jump on the couch---they want them to have their own chairs to sit!
"It all began with one of our dogs "Buster Brown" when a local pluming company MSI services donated a chair for him. And it has taken off like wild fire," said Shelter Executive Director Erin Buckmaster.
The Today Show reported that Buster Brown was adopted as a puppy. But his adoptive parents went through a divorce and Buster went back to the the Knox County Humane Society.
As the story goes, Buster Brown refused to go into a kennel and he insisted on staying in the front office with the shelter's staff.Buster being a kind and friendly dog also loved sharing their chairs.
“One day a local mechanic donated some office chairs to us so we decided we’d give one to Buster. He refused to give it up after that, " said Buckmaster
Buster was in love with his new chair, so much so, that the shelter staff wondered if the other dogs would enjoy chairs as well.
So the shelter asked the community if they would donate used old chairs.
After news spread that the shelter was looking for armchairs, donations started rolling in — and already 10 dogs are lounging happily on their very own chairs.
" We have seen such a impact on the stress level of our dogs it’s been amazing," said Erin Buckmaster. "Lower stress means more adoptions, and calmer dogs in the kennels. We hope other shelters adapt to this new idea. We have seen such a great response from our community. Our motto is "Saving lives 4 paws at a time."
The shelter pets absolutely love their chairs! If anyone has any older chairs they no longer want, please think of the shelter pets! We are located at 1855 Windish Drive Galesburg, IL 61401.— KCHS (@ILkchs1855) March 9, 2018
