KIRKSVILLE, Mo. (KTVO) -Fairy godmothers aren't just in Disney movies.
A Heartland organization called Fairy Godmother is bringing dreams to life by providing teenage girls who are in foster care, or financially in-need, with formal wear for prom.
Stephanie Ahrens-Mills owns a bridal shop in Kirksville. She says prom season is an exciting time to be in the business.
Deciding what to wear for prom is a special occasion itself, but it can be costly.
Mills says now, prom dresses range from $500 to $800.
“I was working with a girl and it was very apparent that there was a need out there, and I couldn’t do it by myself, so I found Jenn Queensland and it was just amazing, it was like kismet,” Mills said.
“We’ve identified a major need where some girls just aren’t getting the same opportunity as others, and we just wanted to be able to bridge that gap so they can have those same childhood experiences that are positive, and have this to reflect back on as adults,” said Queensland.
Queensland and Mills teamed up to create the Fairy Godmother organization, a non-profit with a mission to provide girls in foster care, or financially in need, with formal wear for school events, while helping the girls build confidence and create a sense of community, according to its mission statement.
150 brand new, never before worn dresses are all ready to be that perfect prom gown for a deserving teen.
“We have a plethora of different dresses, we have size zero all the way up to size 30 in different cuts and styles and colors, really anything in the rainbow that you can think of we have it available,” Mills said. “We’ve got stuff that’s completely glittery, we’ve got ball gowns, we have Sherri Hills, how amazing is that, we just really have a variety for girls so that they can really find their dream dress.”
“It's so much fun, generally they have an idea of what they want, because they’re able to view our inventory online and so they have an idea and they get pretty excited once they get to actually wear the dresses,” Queensland said with a smile.
Finding the perfect prom gown is only the beginning though.
“It’s about the shoes, the accessories, the whole look,” Mills said.
“They say, ‘I feel like a princess,’ which is our absolute goal,” Queensland said.
“Everybody deserves to feel like a princess, everybody deserves to have that memory of prom, and feel special at prom, and when you walk down grand march to have that confidence that, ‘I am wearing this gorgeous dress, and I feel beautiful,’ and just building them up, and really making sure that they enjoy those memories, and they have those memories for years to come,” Mills said.
Fairy Godmother operates through a referral process that anyone is welcome to make. Find the online application and get more information on the organization’s Facebook page.
