California Senator 'not aware' of Oakland mayor warning residents of ICE immigration raids

WASHINGTON (Sinclair Broadcast Group) - A California Senator said Thursday she was "not aware" of the Oakland mayor alerting the public of an impending ICE raid in her city.

When asked by Sinclair Broadcast Group what she thought of Mayor Libby Schaaf's move to tip off the public about a federal immigration raid last weekend, Sen. Kamala Harris (D- Calif.) responded "I'm not aware of what you're talking about."

"I'll have to take a look at that."

Mayor Schaaf made national headlines earlier this week after she took to Twitter on Saturday, warning residents of the planned ICE raid.

Acting ICE Director Thomas Homan called the warning "beyond the pale," when speaking to Fox News.

Homan said approximately 800 people thwarted arrest because of it, and that her actions jeopardized officer safety.

"I do not regret sharing this information. It is Oakland’s legal right to be a sanctuary city and we have not broken any laws. We believe our community is safer when families stay together," Schaaf posted on Twitter Tuesday.

According to ICE, half of the 150 people arrested in the three-day sweep had criminal convictions that included assault, battery, crimes against children, weapons charges and driving while under the influence.

200 people were arrested in the Los Angeles area in raids conducted in February.

Information from The Associated Press contributed to this report.
