Officer who arrested Nikolas Cruz after Florida school shooting honored

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (WPEC) - The Broward County Commission honored the Coconut Creek Police officer who arrested the suspect in the mass shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School.

On Valentine's Day, investigators say Nikolas Cruz took an Uber to the school where he opened fire on students and staff. He blended in with students and ran from the school to a nearby Walmart where he bought a drink at Subway. He then walked to McDonald's, then left.

Coconut Police Officer Michael Leonard had Cruz in handcuffs about 80 minutes after the first reports of gunfire.

Commissioners read a proclamation declaring Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2018, as Officer Michael Leonard Appreciation Day in Broward County.

"It's not about me, it's about my brothers and sisters in law enforcement and fire rescue, first responders. We all had a role that day, we continue to have a role keeping our streets and city safe," said Leonard. "I'm honored to be a part of this. I'm honored to wear the badge."

The commission also honored the Coconut Creek Police Department.

Stoneman Douglas students are set to return to class on Wednesday.
