BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBMA) - A local woman, Megan Gagliardi, shared her story with WBMA. At the age of 19 she underwent a successful heart transplant. Initially doctors missed signs of her enlarged heart. But she knew something was wrong and testing finally uncovered the issue.
Right now 32 people are waiting for heart transplants in Alabama. Across the nation, roughly 4,000 are on the waiting list.
"Never in a million years did I think I could make it through something like this. It pushes you to enjoy everyday, love life and be happy where you are," says Gagliardi.
