Petition created for JROTC student killed in Florida shooting to have military burial

WASHINGTON (WJLA) - Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School student Peter Wang died after reportedly holding open a door to help others escape during last week's deadly shooting in Florida.

Now, a petition has been created to give Peter, who was part of the Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps, the honor of a military burial. The Washington Post says Peter's cousin told reporters that holding the door was the last time he was seen alive and the petition says he was in uniform while doing so.

"His selfless and heroic actions have led to the survival of dozens in the area," says the petition on whitehouse.gov. "Wang died a hero, and deserves to be treated as such."

Wang was one of 17 people who were killed after authorities said a gunman opened fire Wednesday at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Police later arrested 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz and charged him with 17 counts of premeditated murder.
