Trump focuses on first responders in visit after Florida shooting

by Frank Maradiaga

(WPEC) — After flying into Palm Beach County, the president of the United States headed south to meet with survivors of the Parkland shooting and those who rushed into danger to save them.

President Donald Trump’s first stop was at Broward Health North Hospital, where some of the victims are recovering. He met privately with two students who were wounded, later telling reporters how "record-setting" response by law enforcement saved one of their lives.

He then went to the Broward County Sheriff’s Department to meet with first responders, including one whose son was shot during the attack.

“What a great job you have done,” said the president to a room full of law enforcement and medical units.

Trump was flanked by prominent Republicans such as Florida Senator Marco Rubio, Governor Rick Scott, and Attorney General Pam Bondi.

He said the doctors were also doing a good job and joked that everyone in the room deserved a raise.

Those present were able to introduce themselves and explain how they contributed on that sad day.

Trump has responded similarly to other mass casualty events since becoming president, meeting with a few victims in private and lavishing praise on law enforcement in public.

First Lady Melania Trump also spoke briefly at the sheriff's department, thanking law enforcement for taking care of the students.

"They were put through a lot in what they were experiencing two days ago and we need to take care of them," she said.

The Trumps then traveled on to Mar-a-Lago about 40 miles away, where they had previously planned to spend the weekend.
