This shop makes homemade gelato into decadent boozy concoctions

When you hear gelato, you probably think of Italy. When you step inside Medzo Gelato Bar and Travel Cafe in Burien, Washington it will feel like you were transported into the land of decadent gelato. The owners have been making the dessert in the Seattle area for more than four years. All of their gelato is made with fresh, authentic, and organic ingredients.

The shop has a a variety of boozy gelato concoctions that are unique yet extremely satisfying. Currently their featured gelato is infused with Bailey's, but no it won't get you buzzed, owner Jennifer Al-Abboud said. "Our concept is to really focus on the dessert aspect of it so people don't really come in to get drunk off our gelato."

"We want to provide something that people love," Al-Abboud explained. You can indulge in a Rossini which is essentially a prosecco sorbet float that has five scoops of sorbet topped with the bubbly which is perfect for the summer time, Al-Abboud added. The idea came about after she visited Italy. "Its a twist on their drink with prosecco and crushed strawberries."

Another item on their menu is their Spirited Affogato. Al-Abboud explained that the word 'Affogato' means drowned in Italian; in Italy they serve gelato drowned in espresso. Medzo created a spin on the traditional dessert by adding a shot of liqueur to the two scoops of gelato.

One of the questions Al-Abboud is frequently asked is, "What is the difference between ice cream and gelato?"

“We say in a nutshell better tasting better for you, it has 50% less air, the servings are very small, small than your ice cream would be. Gelato is denser, creamier and is served at a higher temperature so you couldn't get that brain freeze effect that you do with ice cream, you get a more intense flavor and a creamier texture without the fat," Al-Abboud said.

We are always happy to give samples and to let people try various combinations because you can multiple flavors in a cup.

Al-Abboud claimed that she does sometimes veto peoples decision if its two opposing flavors but she respects people's decision at the same time. Medzo just celebrated their one year anniversary and is continuing to experiment with more decadent flavors.
