There's a secret butterfly garden on a hotel rooftop in the middle of Los Angeles

A butterfly garden is nothing new. But a butterfly garden in the middle of urban, hustling, bustling Los Angeles, on a rooftop of a swanky hotel where guests dine amongst nature….that’s different.

The Petit Ermitage hotel in West Hollywood has a garden on its rooftop that has been fully recognized and certified by the National Wildlife Federation as a sanctuary garden for butterflies, hummingbirds, and bees. To get that rank, the gardeners at the Petit Ermitage had to prove their garden provides adequate food sources, shelter, water, and utilizes sustainable practices.

Butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds are all attracted to the same or similar plants, like lantana, delphinium, and Coronado Red. The National Wildlife Federation encourages these kinds of urban gardens to help boost declining bee and butterfly populations by providing them with the right habitats.

Petit Ermitage itself is on a nice residential street, but a block away are major roads that carry thousands of commuters every day. So it’s really kinda cool to know that, hovering above the madness on the street below, some of the most dainty and beautiful creatures are making their homes on the rooftop of the hotel. Guests can dine amongst them, too. The hotel has outfitted the garden with whimsical chairs and tables and private cabanas, so you can commune with nature while taking in some of the best views of the city below.

Table for two, please!

Check out these other hidden gems around the city that allows you to commune with nature: hiking with wolves (yes, it's a real thing!) and this feral kitty rescue that puts kittens through charm school.
